The 2018 Colorado State Wrestling was February 15th, 16th, and 17th at the Denver Coliseum. Weld Central had seven wrestlers go to State this year: Junior Santana Hernandez, Junior Rieley Roskop, Senior Jimmy LaConte, Senior Wyatt Thyfault, Senior Quentin Jiner, Sophomore Kolton Robertson, and Freshman Tanner Baumgartner.
This year Weld Central had two first time State Champs, Jimmy LaConte(160) and Quentin Jiner(170). Jimmy made it to State all four years of his high school career. He didn’t place freshman year, he got 5th place his sophomore year and 2nd place his junior year. Before the final match, Jimmy explained how he felt excitement and eager for the end result. Jimmy was determined because it was his last year to shine and he did. Jimmy is going to Western State University in Gunnison, Colorado to continue his academic and wrestling career. Quentin explained how he was really nervous, “I went back to the tunnel and started freaking out. Throughout a few hours before the match I kinda found a spot to chill and relax. I talked to my Dad a little bit so by the time I was ready to wrestle I was dancing around and in my groove, like my nerves are gone.” Quentin is going to Cloud County Community College next year to continue his academic and wrestling career as well.
All the other wrestlers did fairly well during their wrestling season. Santana Hernandez was the only one to place and came in 4th place. The rest of the team had a very successful season and they hope to follow into Jimmy’s and Quentin’s footsteps to get the State title in their future seasons to come.
