Have you ever been sitting in an award ceremony at school, and all of a sudden, you hear the award you’re certain you’ve won? Sure enough, they call your first name…. But not your last. Awkward. Not only did you get up for nothing, but you also have to walk back to where you came from, blushing noticeably, certain everyone is looking at you. It is never fun to be embarrassed like that, but you sit back down and try to forget the whole thing ever happened.
Recently, a similar incident happened at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony. Emma Stone, who was a main actress in the hit movie La La Land, was shocked, along with others, to discover that a huge mishap lead to their earning best movie. Mistakenly, s major announcer read off a large red envelope that had bolded red words titled Best Actress, instead of Best Movie, which did go to Stone. Confused in the moment, the announcer read the title of the movie on the card – La La Land. As soon as a couple of backstage crew members came out in front of the audience to give the right envelope, the La La Land actors’, actresses’, and producers’ jaws fell to the floor. Moonlight actually won the Best Movie.
However, Emma Stone did receive her award for Best Actress in La La Land. She later confided to Fox News, “I guess we made history tonight, Moonlight deserved the win. I don’t even know what to say. I was still on such a buzzy train backstage, that I was on another planet already. This felt like another planet. I think it’s an incredible outcome, but a very strange happening for Oscar history.”
Casey Affleck (Manchester By The Sea,) and Damien Chazelle (La La Land) would also receive award that night, for Best Actor and Best Director, respectively. The night was not totally ruined, people were still encouraged despite the malfunctions that had occurred. Everyone remained positive, able to laugh at themselves and the mistakes. Despite the embarrassment, they sat back down, and will now pretend the whole thing never happened. But hey, congrats to all the winners!
